Revolutionizing sustainability: carbon-neutral paper and board crafted from agricultural waste
In collaboration with our trusted partner PaperWise, we are revolutionizing the way agricultural waste is utilized. PaperWise supplies us with paper made from agricultural waste, enabling us to craft innovative and sustainable dataloggers. Through our joint efforts and rigorous research, we have established a thriving cooperation that marries technology with sustainability to create a more eco-conscious future.
Processing crops such as rice, wheat, barley, cereals, corn, hemp, and sugar cane leaves 80% of the plant – its stems and leaves (agricultural waste) – unused. Globally, this equates to billions of tons of agricultural waste generated annually. The majority of this waste is either burnt in biomass power plants or, in less developed areas, in open air. This practice not only results in the loss of valuable resources but also contributes to unnecessary CO2 emissions, environmental pollution, soil degradation, and smog formation. Furthermore, many small-scale farmers, particularly in developing nations, derive their income from only 20% of the plant – the portion that produces food.
Inspired by nature’s zero-waste principle, we are committed to closing the resource loop by transforming agricultural waste into environmentally friendly and socially responsible paper and board products. Our partnership with PaperWise is instrumental in this endeavor, enabling us to produce sustainable packaging solutions and eco-friendly printing and office supplies that help businesses amplify their sustainability efforts. Besides contributing to social awareness among employees, our products also foster a positive corporate image. The environmental impact of our products is 47% lower than traditional tree-based paper and 29% lower than recycled paper. Together, we are making strides towards a more sustainable future.
80% of all agricultural products is waste – but not anymore!
The shift towards reducing environmental footprints is evident across global businesses. By choosing our products, companies can significantly cut down their CO2 emissions, thereby reducing their environmental impact and associated costs for CO2 compensation. To illustrate, the CO2 savings per 1,000 kg of our paper are: Compared to FSC paper from wood fibers: – 231 kg (-20%), CO2-equivalents Compared to recycled paper: – 756 kg (-45%), CO2-equivalents
To quantify the environmental impact of our products beyond climate change, we commissioned an independent environmental study by IVAM University of Amsterdam. This Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) scrutinized every aspect from raw material extraction to production, packaging, and transportation. The assessment covered a broad array of factors such as raw materials, energy, water, chemicals, machinery, and waste. Our product emerged as a clear winner, boasting an environmental impact that is 47% lower than FSC paper from wood fibers and 29% lower than recycled paper.
With a rapidly growing global population, more than 16,500 billion kilograms of agricultural products are generated, with only 15% to 20% used as food. This results in billions of tons of agricultural waste. Some of this waste serves as animal feed, but a substantial part is either burned on-site or used in power stations for energy generation. We firmly believe in the potential to repurpose this waste as raw material for our paper and paperboard products. Our paper products, much like all other high-quality paper types, can be recycled up to seven times before being converted into energy or compost through anaerobic digestion. With our paper products comprising over 85% agricultural waste (100% for our natural brown paper), and meeting the highest quality standards, the shift to paper made from agricultural waste is an obvious and advantageous choice.
