A data logger is a small electronic or paper-based device that automatically records environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, throughout a shipment. Using one requires understanding how it activates, records data at set intervals, stores that information, and makes it accessible once a shipment arrives. What is a data logger, and what does it actually do?

A data logger is a device that continuously monitors and records environmental parameters, most commonly temperature, over a set period of time. It captures readings at regular intervals, stores them internally, and produces a report that shows exactly what conditions a shipment experienced from start to finish.

In cold chain logistics, this matters enormously. Perishable goods, pharmaceuticals, fresh produce, and other temperature-sensitive products must stay within defined ranges throughout transport. A data logger creates an objective, time-stamped record that confirms whether those conditions were maintained, making it an essential tool for compliance, quality control, and dispute resolution.

How does a data logger work step by step?

Data loggers follow a straightforward process: they activate, measure, record, and report. Understanding each stage helps you use them correctly and interpret the data they produce.

  • Activation: The logger is started before shipment or at the point of dispatch, either by pressing a button, removing a pull tab, or scanning it with a device.
  • Measurement: An internal sensor reads the ambient temperature at programmed intervals, typically every 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the configuration.
  • Storage: Each reading is saved to internal memory. Most loggers hold thousands of data points, covering multi-day journeys with ease.
  • Battery operation: A built-in battery powers the sensor and memory throughout the journey. Battery reliability is critical, as a failed battery means lost data.
  • Data retrieval: At the destination, data is accessed either by connecting the logger to a computer via USB, using Bluetooth, or, with newer NFC-enabled loggers, by tapping a smartphone on the label.
  • Reporting: The retrieved data is displayed as a temperature graph or summary report, showing min/max values, time out of range, and other key metrics.

What types of data loggers are used in cold chain monitoring?

There are three main categories of data loggers used in cold chain contexts, each with different trade-offs in terms of cost, usability, environmental impact, and compliance suitability.

Single-use electronic loggers are the current industry standard. Made from plastic with lithium batteries, they are used once and discarded.
