Sustainable Data Logging with LoRaWAN Connectivity

Smart Paper from Leeuwarden and HZPC from Joure are collaborating on an innovation that will make the logistics sector more sustainable: a paper-based data logger with built-in LoRaWAN connectivity.

Developed using paper made from agricultural waste, this intelligent sensor can monitor temperature and other environmental conditions during transport — without the use of plastics or metals that contribute to e-waste.

The new technology enables data to be read automatically and energy-efficiently through the LoRaWAN network, eliminating the need for manual data retrieval. It allows continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity and vibration during global shipments of potatoes, flowers and food products, helping companies detect deviations in the cold chain and reduce product waste.

The project contributes to both the digital and circular transition in Northern Netherlands. By combining sustainable digitisation with regional production and knowledge development, it creates new employment opportunities and strengthens the innovative capacity of local SMEs.
The result — a fully recyclable data logger with LoRaWAN connectivity — represents a major step towards a global, waste-free logistics chain where data and sustainability work hand in hand.
